Union Parish Road Tax Proposal Calls For 12 Mills, Not 10

 FARMERVILLE – Union Parish voters will be asked Nov. 3 to approve a 12-mill parishwide property tax for public roads and bridges for 10 years, according to the final proposition posted by the Louisiana Secretary of State. The official measure is not 10 mills, as some descriptions have suggested; the number 10 refers to the duration of the tax. 

The tax would begin in 2027 and end in 2036. It is expected to collect approximately $2.173 million during its first full year and would be dedicated to constructing, improving and maintaining public roads and bridges throughout Union Parish. 

Rather than creating an entirely new 12-mill burden, the proposition would replace two road taxes that expire after 2026: a 5.13-mill road-construction tax and a 6.15-mill road-maintenance tax. Those existing levies total 11.28 mills, making the proposed rate 0.72 mill higher – an increase of approximately 6.38% in the road-tax component of a property owner’s bill.
