The end of space — let us not repeat the past

By: Tuffy Fields

Last week the United States crossed a major milestone as it marked the safe return of man from space while marking man’s return to space beyond the united space station. We were here once before. Maay remember the emotional view of an American astronaut climbing down the ladder of a moon lander and proclaiming as he stepped on the surface of the moon, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”. Unfortunately, that giant leap waned as the world had marked great changes since the iconic proclamation by the late President John Kennedy that America would go to the moon before the end of the decade. We accomplished the initial mission but had grown numb to the excitement of the day as the realities of a ten year war in Southeast Asia enveloped America. Even the President that launched the space program would not see a moon landing as he was assassinated soon after the program was enacted.
