Special Olympics comes back to Farmerville

The Union Parish Library hosted the third annual Special Olympics on Friday, May 3rd, at the Town of Farmerville Boys and Girls Club Gymnasium. Renee Simpson, chairman, and member of the outreach team put together the successful event had this to say: “This year we had 33 athletes from three schools with their 16 teachers to compete in this year’s game.”
Athletes competed in six events: hurdling, corn hole toss, soccer, archery, obstacle course, and football. During the awards ceremony, students were given a gold medal for their achievements by Miss Louisiana, Sydney Taylor, whose platform supports providing play equipment to Special Education programs. Caleb Seney was also a special guest who shared information about Summer Med Camps.
Simpson adds, “This was a true community endeavor. Enviro Rentals provided our shirts, First Baptist Church provided lunch. Other donations from Read’s Lumber, Brookshires, Dollar Tree, Brokers of Hope, Town of Farmerville, and La. Department of Heath also made the event a success.”

Downsville Charter School – Madilynn Young, Abigail Tygart, Damien Watson, Lance Antley, Talan Tate, River Johnston, Kayden Alford, Lynlee Woods, Seth Roberson, Lakyn Johnston, Junie Holloway
After an awesome day of play, each of the competitors enjoyed a hotdog lunch and left with a backpack full of goodies. The athletes had a fantastic day of exercise, friendly competition, and fun.
