Reading and Riding in NELA
A Read & Ride pilot program
was just completed by the LSU
AgCenter in Caldwell, Franklin,
Ouachita, Richland, and Union
Parishes. This program, funded
by the Living Well Foundation,
has placed fitness bikes with attached
desks in selected schools
and public libraries. Youth and
adult participants can earn
charms by reading a book while
riding a bike.
The goals of this project were
to help improve literacy and increase
physical activity rates in
Northeast Louisiana. Both youth
and adults have participated in
the Read and Ride program. A
log is used to track the time spent
reading while riding.
