What is the public’s best interest? I guess it would depend on who you asked and maybe being specific about the subject.
Take for instance the video equipment that was purchased by the Police Jury to live stream the public meetings the jury holds supposedly to keep the public informed. That I think would be in the public’s best interest. For $21,000 that seems like a good investment according to many. However to a select few on the jury who spends the taxpayers money made the decision that public interest didn’t matter any longer and ceased the live streaming of the meetings. I haven’t seen a reason why they made this decision but no doubt they have at least one!
Maybe it’s the exposure of finding out in a public meeting from concerned citizens that they have been losing hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of a few years!
Maybe it’s the lack of answers as to why so much money is lost in the operations of the detention center. After be cautioned, repeatedly, this past year 2024 they were looking at a deficit unless measures were taken to offset it, no constructive action was taken. Repeatedly advised that staffing levels were sorely inadequate and not until the last months of the year was question asked how to solve a $149,000 overtime problem. Is it any wonder the detention center operation finished the year with a $300,000 deficit? Questions like these are brought to the police jury and it’s possible this is the kind of public interest information they don’t want live streamed to the public. Keep in mind it’s taxpayer dollars they are spending (known as chump change to some)!!!!
