It is amazing how time goes by for us and we are sitting at the coffee table asking ourselves, “Where has all the time gone”.
On August 1st, 1990, I went to be in my apartment in Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia. As usual I fell asleep as the BBC signed off. The next day was the beginning of the weekend. At six o’clock the sun was up when BBC signed back on with its traditional trumpet blowing and the announcement that “this is London”; but this time with a twist. The announcement continued that, “Our entire programming is preempted to cover the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq”. Thus the world was transfixed on a small desert country that wanted no more than to live in peace. The following six months was a continual military build up and diplomatic brinksmanship of monumental proportion.
One evening a close British friend, Ken Evans, told me that the build-up was great, “After Viet Nam, America needs a win”. I felt insulted and he knew it. In retrospect, he was right, and Desert Storm was a new beginning for our great nation.
