Growing up in the rural deep south was a true treat. There was closeness within communities and enough love to overflow the cups of those that lived there. Every Sunday we attended Sunday school and church while Vacation Bible School was a special week of the year for the young children. I remember a stranger showing up at our elementary school, talking with all the students and giving everyone a free Bible. Religion surrounded us and it was no different with other religions around the world.
We would accept the teachings of the Bible and the stories were every bit as adventurous as any novel we could find at the local drug store. Unlike science which requires a hypothesis to be proven to be right, religion is faith based and the proof is in the belief of the individual. One major difference between religion and science is how they determine truth. Religious teachings are often considered permanent and unchanging by believers. Scientific knowledge, however, is considered temporary and can be revised. For example, scientific theories about the universe have changed as technology and evidence improved, while religious beliefs often remain the same over time. Religion is comforting and permanent and helps us find a common ground among all the believers.
