PUBLIC RECORDS REVEAL UNION PARISH PAID NEARLY $160,000 TO HOUSE PRISONERS IN OTHER PARISHES
Newly obtained financial records raise questions about jail overcrowding, criminal court delays and government transparency as voters prepare for November 3 election
FARMERVILLE, LA — October 30, 2026
Union Parish taxpayers have paid $159,875.01 to detention facilities in four neighboring parishes over a period extending from May 2024 through September 13, 2026, according to financial records recently furnished to The Gazette in response to a public records request.
The expenditures raise questions about the cost of housing prisoners outside Union Parish, the management of the criminal justice system and the availability of financial information to taxpayers.
The disclosure comes just days before the November 3 election, when Union Parish voters will decide a Police Jury tax proposition and participate in the election of a new district judge.
