The Methodist revival places emphasis on personal religious experience, training or calling that leads to fostering community engagement and evangelism. Jesus instructs his followers (us) to baptize and teach all nations. Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” definitely highlights the importance of spreading the teachings of Jesus, planting seeds, creating new believers and nurturing/ strengthening the faith of the current faithful. 

Several faithful & influential leaders shaped the Methodist revival movement. 

John Wesley — He is the founder of the Methodist movement, emphasizing personal faith and methodical devotion. 

Charles Wesley — Known for writing over 6,500 hymns, he significantly contributed to Methodist worship and theology. 

George Whitefield — A prominent evangelist whose preaching style attracted large crowds and helped spread Methodism. 

Francis Asbury — Instrumental in establishing Methodism in America, he traveled extensively as a circuit rider. 

Richard Allen — A key figure in the African American Methodist community, he founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church. 

We, too, can be “influential” in these times we live in. We just need to be “in the moment” every day… watching for opportunities to speak the name of Jesus – to tell those we meet that God loves them. 

Please, come to Revival this Sunday and be energized – be warmed by the love of Jesus and carry this warmth and peace out into our community.

Examining the Spiritual Life – II Corinthians 13:3-8 

Revival is a time for the Church to take an honest look at ourselves to examine the health of our spiritual lives. The Apostle Paul calls the Church in Corinth to a similar personal time of examination. 

He lays out the standard of Christian power that should be found in all Christians. Before we were saved, we were helpless, powerless, spiritually dead. After salvation, we have access to – and should be displaying – the same power in our lives that raised Jesus from the dead! 

The measure of Christianity is not Church membership, Baptism or Church attendance. The real measure of Christianity is the power of Christ in us. 

Paul shared these evidences of that power with the Church: 

A challenge for the Christian life (self examination); 

The expected change in the Christian life (weakness trumped by God’s power); The consistency of the Christian life (living for Christ) 

What does the power of Christ in our life look like? A changed life. Is there evidence of Christ in us? Or evidence of the world in us? 

Paul teaches that we are saved by grace through faith. Our “goodness” has nothing to do with God saving us. We don’t earn salvation; it is a free gift of grace. 

No, we aren’t saved BY good works, we are saved to DO good works. Salvation produces good fruit in our lives. He who has begun a good work in us is faithful in completing it. 

God makes us new creatures. If you have never experienced this type of change in your life, today can be the day of your salvation. If you have experienced change, but life has distracted you, today can be the day of your revival.

Romans 12 NKJV – through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith … Let love be without hypocrisy. As a Christian, we love others with our whole heart. People can tell if we are ‘faking’ that we care. 

Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another… Whereas we may hate the sin, we should never hate the sinner; not condoning the sin, but still loving the sinner. As children of God, we should have a good relationship with others. Jesus reminds us in John 8:54 – It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. So, the only honor we should seek is from God. Matthew 23:12 – And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. 

If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. We should spend time with people, sharing their excitement about their Christian life. We are actually serving the LORD, when we serve others. When was the last time you put the needs of others before ‘self’?
