Bible Literacy — Josh Howerton Calls Politician’s Claim About Jesus ‘Heresy’ — article written by James Lasher, June 13, 2026 (paraphrased) 

>> Pastor Josh Howerton, a third-generation pastor, is the Senior Pastor of Lakepointe Church, a multisite (and multilingual) church with six campuses across Dallas, Texas. He says, “one of the biggest theological battles today is not coming from outside the church, but from public figures who use biblical language while redefining what Scripture teaches. 

In a recent video, the pastor of Lakepointe Church responded to comments from a Texas state Representative who said Jesus never asked people to worship Him. Howerton rejected the claim and pointed to the book of Revelation, where Christ receives worship and is presented as the object of worship throughout eternity. 

“This is not me being mean or exaggerating. He’s an actual heretic,” Howerton said. “Like a biblically defined false teacher and heretic.” 

Howerton said The Representative’s statement ignores passages in Revelation that depict Jesus, the Lamb of God, seated on the throne as countless believers bow before Him in worship. 

The pastor said many people embrace an incomplete picture of Jesus that focuses on His earthly ministry while overlooking what Scripture says about His future reign. Revelation presents Christ as King of Kings and Lord of Lords who will rule His kingdom and judge the nations. 

Howerton also criticized what he sees as a growing trend of politicians using Scripture to persuade Christians while promoting ideas that conflict with biblical teaching. “This is the first guy I’ve ever seen whose, really his whole platform is using the Bible to convince Christians to support godless things,” he said. 

The exchange highlights a broader issue facing believers: biblical literacy. Howerton urged Christians to read the entirety of Scripture rather than relying on social media clips, political messaging or popular sound bites. He said a strong understanding of the Bible helps believers recognize false teaching and remain grounded in the truth of God’s Word. 

As debates over faith continue in the public square, Howerton said Christians must test every claim against Scripture and remain anchored to the full biblical picture of Jesus Christ. <<

The Apostle Paul saw everything he did as being appointed by God (vs. 13). He gave the credit to God alone and to His sovereignty. 

Like Paul, God has placed each one of us within a sphere of influence and apportioned us an area of ministry. It is God who guides our lives, who puts us where we are today, in our family unit, our job opportunity, our community, our Church family. And He has apportioned us responsibilities within that sphere. 

Our lives have a purpose. God is at work in each of our lives to accomplish His purposes. 

Paul had no idea the impact his life was having on Christianity at that time and for generations to come. He gave God all the credit, boasting only in the Lord (vs. 17). 

Christians, like Paul, realize that Jesus saved us and then changed us. He empowers us, and guides our lives. His grace covers us day by day, and His mercy follows us wherever we go. We can boast only in the Lord.

1 John 3:8. Satan was a beautiful angel in Heaven who led music and worship. Satan decided he wanted to be like God. He rebelled against God and was thrown out of Heaven along with 1/3 of the angels who followed him. The devil was given a lot of power on earth, though not as much power as God. He and his angels turned demons, roam to and fro seeking people to destroy them. Satan is smart, cunning, and certainly appears as appealing. We must stay close to God and the Holy Spirit to overcome the devil. Jesus came and gave his life so that we can defeat the devil. After the tribulation and the 1000 year reign, Satan and all those he has tricked into following him, will be cast into the lake of fire for eternity.

Fearing his brother, Esau, Jacob had left home. Genesis 28:10-17 – Now Jacob went out from Beersheba … he came to a certain place and stayed there all night …he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. During that time, God often spoke through dreams; today HE usually speaks through the Holy Spirit. 

At this time, Jacob does not have a personal relationship with God, as Abraham his grandfather and Issac his father had. Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” Having been reared with Godly parents, home, and principles, Jacob did not know God personally. 

Christ is the ladder to Heaven, giving us access to God – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6). Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved – Acts 4:12. Christ came down to earth to offer salvation. One day angels will carry Christians up to be with Him forever (the beggar died, and was carried by the angels – Luke 16:22b). 

Everyone must come to Christ on His own; we must experience Him for ourself. The God of Jacob can be your God as well. Is the Lord your God? Does your life show it? Christ Jesus gave His life that we might be saved from our sin. Let us, as Christians, live for Him.
