Wayne Lowery Abercrombie

Wayne Lowery Abercrombie, a beloved husband, father, and esteemed member of the community, passed away on August 26, 2023, at his residence in Mooresville, NC, at the age of 78. He was born on May 31, 1945, in Seneca, SC, to Raymond Abercrombie and Mildred Lowery Abercrombie.

Wayne led a life filled with passionate pursuits and unwavering dedication. Graduating with a Master’s Degree, he embarked on a successful career as an archaeologist and owner of Archeological Explorations and Excavations. His work took him to various historical sites, where he made significant contributions, including the Wilkinson Native American site, Henry Clay’s Homestead, and the first European settlement in the interior of North America, Fort San Juan.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Wayne had a strong devotion to his faith. He served Southside Baptist Church as a Trustee and actively participated in several committees. He showed his faith by doing his best to live like Jesus, trying to love everyone he met.

Wayne cherished his relationships with family and friends. He found joy in spending time with loved ones, whether it be engaging in lively conversations, embarking on adventures, or simply enjoying peaceful moments together. His infectious sense of humor, genuine kindness and sharing nature, endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A proud veteran, Wayne served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War as a Sergeant (E-5) with Lucky’s Raiders. His bravery and sacrifice were acknowledged with the Purple Heart Award. Wayne enjoyed sharing his experiences at Richard’s Coffee Shop with his buddies every Thursday morning. His story of “The Snake” was featured in a book written by the group.

In his free time, Wayne indulged in his hobbies of traveling, rock hunting, and collecting Native American artifacts. He especially treasured his Louisiana heritage, relishing in hunting, fishing, and creating lasting memories with his friends and family.

Wayne is survived by his loving spouse of 55 years, Ellen Abercrombie of Mooresville; his devoted daughters, Emily Herrero (Juan) of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and Elizabeth (Libbie) Griffin (Archie) of Indian Trail, NC; and his cherished granddaughter, Maggie Griffin. He is also survived by his brother, David Abercrombie of Rogers, Arkansas, and sister, Brenda Abercrombie of Houston, Texas. He was predeceased by his brothers, Danny, Ray, Robert, and Paul Abercrombie, as well as his parents, Mildred Lowery Abercrombie and Raymond Orr Abercrombie.

A Celebration of Life in honor of Wayne Lowery Abercrombie’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at 2 PM with full military honors followed by the service at Southside Baptist Church, located at 525 S. Broad Street, Mooresville, NC 28115. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

In memory of Wayne’s love for his Louisiana heritage, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Union Museum of History and Art, 211 N. Main Street, Farmerville, La 71241. Contributions in Wayne’s honor can also be directed to Southside Baptist Church.

Wayne Lowery Abercrombie will forever be remembered for his unwavering spirit, his unwavering dedication to preserving history, and his unwavering love for his family. May his legacy continue to inspire all those who knew him.
