Two dead in early morning Union Parish crash, speed suspected

Lillie – On Sunday, June 11, 2023, shortly after 1:30 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash on U.S. Hwy 167 south of Cook Road. This crash claimed the life of 25-year-old Jaylen Norman of El Dorado, AR and an unidentified passenger.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a Nissan sedan, driven by Norman, was traveling north on U.S. Hwy 167 in the inside lane. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan exited the roadway to the right, traveled down a large embankment, and struck a tree before becoming fully engulfed in flames. During the crash, Norman, who was unrestrained, was ejected from the vehicle.

As a result of this crash, Norman suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Union Parish Coroner’s Office. An unidentified passenger of the Nissan was found inside the vehicle and also pronounced deceased at the scene. Routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers urge anybody with information relating to this crash, to please contact Louisiana State Police Troop F at 318-345-0000.

While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Properly wearing your seat belt is one of the most effective ways to save your life and reduce injuries in crashes.

Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities.

In 2023, Troop F has investigated 17 fatal crashes, resulting in 19 deaths.
