Idling on the couch with ‘Wagon Train’

At 3 p.m. every weekday, if possible, I love to be stretched out on the couch watching reruns of “Wagon Train” on MeTV. It somehow just makes me feel good, though I’m not sure why.

I grew up with it from 1957-1965 in my formative years – as did many of you – but I also grew up with “Bonanza” and “The Rifleman,” which air every day immediately before “Wagon Train” on the same channel. I love “Bonanza”; don’t get me wrong. Always have. It’s just that in 2025 I don’t want to stop everything I’m doing and watch it every day.

Maybe it’s the fact that not only did I watch “Wagon Train” on regular network TV, but I also tuned in to daytime repeats, billed as “Major Adams, Trailmaster” from 1963-1965. I remember eating peanut butter and pineapple preserve sandwiches after school, virtually glued to the TV screen.
