Hostile punctuator? Me??? How silly!!!

I’ve spent much of my life thinking of punctuation as
one of the great gifts of modern-day written language. I
mean, if you study most of the classic languages, punctuation
as we know it barely existed – and I’ve often wondered
how tricky that must have been.
That kind of wondering? I guess I came by
it honest. After all, I taught journalism for 34
years, including 34 classes of copy editing. To
me, those little marks were the tools that gave
shape and clarity to words. A period offered certainty.
A comma gave us breathing room. An ellipsis
let our thoughts linger.
