Dr. Cathy Stockton, the new superintendent of schools in Union Parish, recently spoke at the Union Parish School Board Office about the proposed implementation of the first Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program at Union Parish High School. A CNA provides basic care to patients in healthcare settings. To become a CNA, individuals typically need to complete a state-approved training course and pass a state certification exam, which includes both a written section and a hands-on skills assessment.
The proposed course will be offered to seniors through dual enrollment at Louisiana Delta Community College’s Ruston Campus.
For the program to be implemented in the spring of 2025, a minimum of 10 students must enroll.
If the program is successful, Union Parish will provide transportation for students to the Louisiana Delta Community College Ruston Campus to complete their training. This training will be free of charge for students due to available grant funding, which will cover all associated costs. Students can begin working as CNAs as young as age 16. This is a valuable opportunity for UPHS students to start a healthcare career, addressing the ongoing shortage of healthcare workers.
By participating in this program, graduating seniors can graduate in May 2025 and start working immediately.
