God IS Love
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God…” 1 John 4:7
The following is abridged from Alistair Begg’s sermon “The Power and Message of the Cross,” at Baylor University’s inaugural National Preaching Conference in 2019. It shows us how strong the power of belief is. And how faithful God’s love, mercy and grace are.
Without the preaching of the cross, without preaching the cross to ourselves all day and every day, we will very, very quickly revert to faith plus works as the ground of our salvation; so that, to go to the old Fort Lauderdale question – “If you were to die tonight and you were getting entry into heaven, what would you say?”
If you (me) answer that in the first person, we’ve immediately gone wrong. “Because I…” “Because I believed. Because I have faith. Because I am this. Because I am continuing.” … Loved ones, I tell you, the only proper answer’s in the third person: “Because He…” “Because He…””
Think about the thief on the cross. I can’t wait to find that fellow one day to ask him, “How did that shake out for you? Because you were cussing the guy (Jesus) out with your friend. You’d never been in a Bible study. You’d never got baptized. You didn’t know a thing about church membership. And yet – and yet, you made it! You made it! How did you make it?”
That’s what the angel must have said to the thief on the cross — you know, like, “What are you doing here?”
“Well, I don’t know.”
“What do you mean, you don’t know?”
“Well, ’cause I don’t know.”
“Well, you know… Excuse me. Let me get my supervisor.” They go get the supervisor angel: “So, we’ve just a few questions for you. First of all, are you clear on the doctrine of justification by faith?”
The guy says, “I’ve never heard of it in my life.”
“And what about… Let’s just go to the doctrine of Scripture immediately.”
This guy’s just staring.
And eventually, in frustration, he (the supervisor angel) says, “On what basis are you here?”
And he said, “The man on the middle cross said I can come.”
That is the only answer. It is only the cross of Christ that deals both with the dreadful depths of despair of one man and the pretentious arrogance of the pride of the other man.
John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
1 John 4:9 “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.”
Jude 1:21 “Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.”

Looking Forward in Faith – II Corinthians 5:1-10
When we look at the condition of our world, and at the struggles we face, it’s easy to become discouraged. It’s easy to let surrounding circumstances influence our mindset in a negative way.
Paul, a man whose life was constantly under fire from the world, reminds us that, as believers, we don’t have to live solely by sight. Rather, we are taught to live by faith (vs. 7).
What a privilege it is to be able to look past the moment with great confidence into the promised future that God has for us!
In verses 2 and 4, Paul uses words like “groan”, “burden”, and “naked” to describe our current situation. Groaning is associated with distress; burden is associated with the great heaviness of life at times; and nakedness indicates that without Christ, we are incomplete or lacking.
But in verse 5, we see that we can look to the future with confidence. God has not only prepared us for immortality, but He has given us the Holy Spirit as a down payment.
As believers, we now have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. He isn’t just with us. He doesn’t just guide and protect us. He doesn’t just keep us today. God has sealed us for the promised future (eternal life) He has for us. Though it’s not yet seen, it is a reality!
In Heaven, not only will Christians have a new home, a new body, and be clothed perfectly, we will also stand before the judgement seat of Christ (vs. 10).
Remember, there are two distinct judgments spoken of in the New Testament. Christians will stand before the Judgement Seat of Christ (Bema), where we will receive a reward for the things we did on earth, not condemnation.
Your eternal reward is based on your Christian life today! All believers will receive a new dwelling and be clothed perfectly, but our rewards in Heaven will be much different.
The Great White Throne Judgement is for the unsaved, the lost throughout the ages, those who refuse the gift of salvation offered by God through His Son, Jesus. They will be cast into the Lake of Fire ( Revelation 20).
Which future awaits you?

Pastor Bubba Hoggatt
Mike brought our special music today with the encouraging song, “Silent Prayer”.
Bro. Bubba‘s message today was titled. “Non-negotiable”.
Acts 1: 6-11.
The church is made up of different types of people with a variety of gifts and talents. We are all unique, but some things are non-negotiable. Four of these are, Bible study, prayer, assembling of ourselves together, and witnessing. All Christians are commanded to do these things. Most Christians find witnessing to be the hardest of these commands. The way we live our lives does point people to Jesus, but we all fail at times. Someone must tell people how to be saved. There are three things we should do to share our faith.
1) Understand the Command. Acts 1:8.
At Jesus’ ascension two angels appeared and asked them “Why do you stand here gazing up toward Heaven?”.
The implication was that there was work to be done. When we are saved, the Holy Spirit comes to live in us and empowers us to share the gospel. No matter what we do for a living or to care for our families, our primary work is to be a witness for Jesus.
2) Reaction to Distraction Acts1: 6,7.
Often we are in a hurry and miss an opportunity to witness. We should always have our mind focused on a chance to share Jesus. We should pray for opportunities to witness.
3) Discern the Return. Acts 1: 10,11.
We will all meet Jesus soon, either through our physical death or when he returns. If we are concerned about others, we should be anxious to share with them about Jesus’s return. We have the answers!

Matthew 13:24-43: The USA, founded as a Christian nation – now God’s Word is forbidden in public schools, nativity scenes removed from public property, etc. Any surprise that America has changed? As a Nation, we have turned our back on God.
Complex sowing: People are the ones sowed – God’s children, HE who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; Wicked One, the tares are the sons of the wicked one. Both are in the world AND in the church. Crucial growing: Good and Bad growing together. The danger presented in this is ”imitation”, not being able to determine which is which – in the beginning.
Tares are present in the church more than one can imagine, one professing to be a Christian without possessing Christ in one’s heart. Eventually the truth will come out. Trials and tribulations reveal the truth in how one handles day to day real conflict! The “spiritual man” has eyes on God; the “carnal man” has gotten away from God; the “natural man” confesses Christ, yet does not possess Him. Sadly, not only church members, but pastors can fall into this category. Both begin together, but they have a different end – at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, ‘First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn’. One’s decision makes the difference – Hell – As the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age; Heaven – the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
