Continuing our verse-by-verse of II Corinthians, we look at Chapters 2:16b-3:6. Remember some Jewish folks, calling themselves Christian, were trying to move the church back to Judaism.
They began by bad-mouthing the Apostle Paul, questioning his character, his sincerity, even his message.
So in our text today, Paul gives them some real evidence of who he is in Christ and the power of his message. He tells the church they are a “letter” written on his and Timothy’s hearts. He reminds them of the almost 2-year investment in their lives and the evidence of that work.
Paul doesn’t say “Listen to my words,” he says, “Look at my life!” How many of us today are comfortable saying that to prove our faith?
Remember Jesus said that the mark of a true disciple is not in our words, but in our denying self daily, taking up our cross, and following Him.
There has been so much emphasis on simply believing, that perhaps we have made salvation cheap and weak. The Apostle James said that faith unaccompanied by evidence is dead faith.
Paul tells the church that their changed lives, like his, prove the working of the living God in their lives. They weren’t trying to conform to rules (religion), but were being transformed by Christ’s Holy Spirit in them, which gives freedom from the Law and the bondage of sin.
Their lives were and our lives should be evidence of God’s power at work in us. We live new lives because we have been reborn into the Christian life.
Lots of people today call themselves Christian, but still live a life bound in sin. Paul refers to it as denying the power of Christ over sin in your life.
Jesus gives victory over the bondage of sin! The One Who claimed victory over the grave is the same Savior Who can give you the victory of a changed life.

Matthew 7:13-23 – wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Are you sure, when you die, you will go to Heaven? It requires having asked Jesus into your heart to save you from your sins. Two roads: One leads to destruction, and many will follow it; one to ‘life’, and few will follow it. It is our choice.
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in Heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name (preached), cast out demons in Your name (done miracles), and done many wonders in Your Name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you’.
Many are deceived into thinking it is an easy road, which includes all people. They believe all roads lead to Heaven. Wrong! Doing all we can do will not get us there. Jesus warned people many times about Hell, even pointing out people faithful in attendance, baptized and serving in church, cannot get to Heaven except by receiving Jesus into their heart. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved – John 10:9.
The way is simple, yet often difficult. It can be costly, but it is up to Christians to tell others about Christ. It may not be received well, but we are still to “Go tell” – Acts 1:8.
