Kindness. “Is it true; is it kind,
or is it necessary?” This quote
is from Socrates (Essential
Thinkers – Socrates). Socrates
was a Greek philosopher who
was known for his relentless
questioning of and pursuit of
virtue. He shifted philosophy
to ethics and his way of life,
character, and thought exerted
a profound influence on Classical
antiquity and Western
philosophy. Socrates famously
said; “the unexamined life is
not worth living”.
Socrates admitted that his understanding
of piety was radically
different from the conventional
understanding. He
used his intellect, not merely
a ceremonial test, to determine
whether he and/or others were
pious. He didn’t believe in
‘blind’ ceremonial practices
of civic religion. He thought
you needed to examine your
life and ‘know’ what your virtues
were and that you should
spend your lifetime searching
for a better understanding of
the godly and the reverent.
This religious self-examination
must have struck his fellow
citizens as bizarre because it
was not ‘the norm’. Socrates
was unapologetic about this
new way of thinking about
being devoted and faithful to
‘the gods”. He was also Not
apologetic when telling others
about receiving the divine
sign – a voice that has come to
him since childhood – warning
him away from certain undertakings
and in doing so giving
him unfailing advice.
One could think that God was
speaking to Socrates. Very
well could have been. We
know that God spoke with
many people in Biblical times.
Hmmm; we’re still in Biblical
times! AND He does still
speak to a few select people.
I would venture to guess that
God’s bottom line to all of us
is to be; truthful, kind and do
what is right and necessary.
Who is our biggest role model
for doing what is right? Christ
Jesus. Who is our biggest
role model for being true, being
kind, being humble, being
compassionate, loving and forgiving?
Christ Jesus.
That encapsulates Jesus,
doesn’t it? Forgiving AND
Giving. Giving us the way,
giving us hope, giving us the
gift of salvation. In this earthly
gift-giving season, let us look
to our lives and gift all those
around us by being the most
Kind person ever!

“Behold, a virgin shall conceive,
and bear a son, and shall
call his name Immanuel.” – Isaiah
7:14
“Let us today go down to Bethlehem,
and in company with
wondering shepherds and adoring
Magi, let us see him who
was born King of the Jews, for
we by faith can claim an interest
in him, and can sing, ‘Unto
us a child is born, unto us a son
is given.’
Jesus is Jehovah incarnate, our
Lord and our God, and yet our
brother and friend; let us adore
and admire. Let us notice at the
very first glance his miraculous
conception. It was a thing unheard
of before, and unparalleled
since, that a virgin should
conceive and bear a Son.
The first promise ran thus,
‘The seed of the woman’, not
the offspring of the man. Since
venturous woman led the way
in the sin which brought forth
Paradise lost, she, and she
alone, ushers in the Regainer
of Paradise.
Our Saviour, although truly
man, was as to his human nature
the Holy One of God. Let
us reverently bow before the
holy Child whose innocence
restores to manhood its ancient
glory; and let us pray that he
may be formed in us, the hope
of glory.
Fail not to note his humble parentage.
His mother has been
described simply as ‘a virgin,’
not a princess, or prophetess,
nor a matron of large
estate. True, the blood of kings
ran in her veins; nor was her
mind a weak and untaught one,
for she could sing most sweetly
a song of praise; but yet how
humble her position, how poor
the man to whom she stood affianced,
and how miserable the
accommodation afforded to the
new-born King!
Immanuel, God with us in our
nature, in our sorrow, in our
lifework, in our punishment, in
our grave, and now with us, or
rather we with him, in resurrection,
ascension, triumph, and
Second Advent splendour.”

Matthew 6:19-24 – “Do not lay
up for yourselves treasures on
earth, where moth and rust destroy
and where thieves break
in and steal … For where your
treasure is, there your heart
will be also. Treasures on earth
can be food, clothing, as well
as monetary. We should store
up what cannot ruin, rot, or be
robbed. Wealth can be invested
or in a bank, but it can be taken
from us or we, from it! It will
not go with us, when we pass
away. All we have is a ‘lease’
on life; when we leave, nothing
will go with us.
Eyes are said to be a ‘window
to the soul’. When ‘windows’
are clean, the Light will come
through, but if not, light is limited.
It depends on the spiritual
condition of the eye. We should
see wealth, as God sees wealth,
since everything comes from
God. We are to lay up for yourselves
treasures in Heaven.
Those who tithe have a ‘heart’
condition – seeing well, storing
well, serving well.
“No one can serve two masters;
… he will be loyal to the
one and despise the other. You
cannot serve God and mammon
(money). We should invest
time in Christian service. The
King of Kings will not play 2nd
fiddle. Internal things do not
have Eternal value; however,
Eternal things (things of God),
will have Internal values.
