To the Editor:
My letter to the editor last week received dozens of favorable comments, along with some criticism.I appreciate everyone who took the time to respond. I take this opportunity to address those criticisms and make sure readers understand that my trucking business already pays substantial road-use taxes and permit costs.
The Union Parish Police Jury is asking voters to approve an additional $21 million over 10 years through a proposed tax renewal and increase. I oppose the proposal because the Police Jury has not adequately explained how existing parish road revenue has been spent, what specific work the new money would fund or why the requested amount is necessary.
Before asking tax payers for another $21 million, the Police Jury should provide clear evidence that existing revenue has been used effectively and transparently. Taxpayers deserve to know what past revenue has accomplished and why additional taxation is justified.
