Some columns simply refuse to grow old

It’s reminiscent of preparing to teach my feature writing class. 

I’m reading the book “Deadline Artists: America’s Greatest Newspaper Columns,” and it brings to mind the anthology “Pulitzer Prize Feature Stories” I used to require my students to read. Both include hard-to-forget happenings as well as multitudes of memorable phrasings. 

I always loved to share good writing samples with my students, and I’d carry an armload of books across the Quadrangle to George T. Madison Hall, along with additional photocopies of treasured samples. (I’m sure I enjoyed the process much more than my students.) 

Today, finding a well-turned phrase still ignites my creative juices. So I’m looking forward to digesting this tome’s 168 columns that span 400-plus pages. Topics stretch from war and politics to sports and humor.
