Fleming and Letlow Advance to June 27 Runoff as Cassidy Suffers Heavy Defeat

Union Parish Republican voters joined the rest of Louisiana on Saturday in sending incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy to a decisive defeat in the Republican primary for United States Senate, with U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow and Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming advancing to a June 27 runoff.

The result was a striking rejection of Cassidy, a two-term incumbent who entered the race with the advantages of office but finished third statewide. Letlow led the Republican field with 178,406 votes, or about 45 percent. Fleming finished second with 111,840 votes, or about 28 percent. Cassidy trailed in third with 98,030 votes, or about 25 percent, while Mark Spencer received 8,238 votes, or about 2 percent.
