Question: Have you ever done something “just a little different” at church? This past Sunday, April 12, was Bright Sunday and we celebrated it with gusto. Bright Sunday (Holy Humor Sunday) is an old tradition of the ancient Christian church.

Early church theologians like Augustine (354-430) and Gregory of Nyssa (335- 395) reflected on the idea that through the resurrection, God played the ultimate joke on the devil. Bright Sunday serves as a day of joy and laughter

During the middle ages in parts of Europe, especially Germany, churches developed a tradition called Risus Paschalis, Latin for “the Easter laugh.” On the Second Sunday of Easter, preachers would use humor to celebrate Jesus’ victory over death and victory over Satan.

While the practice faded over time, still, the core theological meaning remains. On Easter we celebrate the Good News that through Christ, death doesn’t get the last laugh. On Bright Sunday we try to hold on to the ecstatic feelings that the people who knew Jesus must have felt when they realized that “He Lives”. The full realization of Christ’s resurrection and the promise of salvation would have surely overjoyed them.

The disciples were told to “… go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…” Matthew 28:19-20 We, too, are asked; no… commanded to go forth just like His disciples and tell the Good News of Jesus Christ Mark 16:15 Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to the whole creation.”

And so, we continue the time-honored tradition of Bright Sunday by conducting an especially joyous Sunday Service with brightly colored clothing, and sprinkling of stories, pun and jokes. We also continue the tradition of evangelizing… spreading the Good News!

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek (and to all of us, too). 1 Peter 1:25 “But the word of the Lord remains forever. And this word is the Good News that was preached to you.”

Mark your calendars and come worship with us on Bright Sunday 2027 (April 4th

Sorrow Leading to Repentance ~ 2 Corinthians 7:2-10

In ancient times, the heart wasn’t connected to feelings and emotions as it is today; it was identified with knowledge, understanding and wisdom. In vs 2-3, the Apostle Paul tells the church at Corinth to accept what he’s saying as truth. He is concerned for their spiritual well-being at all costs.

This is a picture of a loving pastor. Paul understood that leading God’s people could be a difficult task, and that he had to be strong and sometimes direct. He could not let them just do as they pleased, turning his back to error.

Paul knew that pastoring means loving, correcting, teaching, instructing, holding accountable and, and addressing anything that contradicts God’s truth.

He had dealt with just about every kind of reaction to God’s truth – from pats on the back to whips on the back. And now, some in this beloved Church felt hurt or even angry because of a letter of correction Paul had sent them earlier.

In verses 8-10, he acknowledges their hurt feelings, and tells them at first he regretted it, but now he was rejoicing. Because recognition of and godly sorrow for sins lead to repentance and salvation.

If you are not a Christian, the greatest truth is sometimes the most difficult to hear. No one is good enough. Not one. As a sinner, we are incapable of pleasing God. We are helpless in our sin, children of wrath outside of God’s grace.

But God, rich in His mercy, sent His Son to be your Savior, to die on your behalf so that your sins are forgiven. You can walk through this life with Him by your side through thick and thin. Even after death, you will live in joyful eternity with Him.

Make today the day of sorrow for your sin, repentance (turning away from your sin), and salvation through humbly accepting Jesus’ payment for your sin. Find a church that teaches the Bible and grow your faith with like-minded believers. This is the way of peace and joy. This is the way of no regret.

Pastor Bubba Hoggatt

The choir did a great job on their uplifting, special, “What a Day That Will Be”.

Bro. Bubba‘s message today was from John. John 17 is a prayer Jesus prayed with his disciples just before he was betrayed and arrested. When we don’t know what to pray, we can pray, and the Holy Spirit will carry our prayers. The purpose of prayer is to bring our will in line with God’s will. Here are six things that Jesus shows us to pray.

1) Security John 17: 11

Jesus had protected His twelve during the time He was with them on earth. He is asking the Father to protect his own when he leaves this earth. We should also ask for his security and protection.

2) Serenity John 17: 13.

Jesus asked for Joy for his followers. If we have the joy of Jesus in our lives, we will be able to go through difficult times without whining, worrying, or weeping. Jesus brings a deep joy within us that gives us the strength and peace to withstand whatever the world has for us. We can face chaos, without chaos.

3) Sanctification John 3:17.

The Word is truth. When we hear what people in the world say is truth, we must know what the Bible says. Pray to be set apart from the world by knowing what the Bible says. This is truth.

4) Sending John 17: 18.

Share the gospel. Be motivated and feel compelled to tell about Jesus. When we share, we have done our part. The Holy Spirit will do the rest. Pass it down through the generations. Satan tries to make this difficult. Jesus is praying to the father to help us share what he has done for us.

5) Selflessness John 17:21.

We should love and support one another in the church. Although we do not always agree with each other, we should be willing to work through it in love. When the church has open disagreements, it hurts our ability to bring people to Jesus. We know Jesus loves us and we can show our love for Him by the way we serve one another.

Judges 6:1-16 – Due to the children of Isarel’s sin, God allowed Midian to taken over. The Midianites would destroy their produce, living them impoverished. So, the people cried out to the LORD. Gideon, was hiding in the winepress from the Midianites, and the Angel of the Lord appeared to him …

Do you believe in miracles? Do you wonder, “Why God am I not healed, still no job, still struggling with issues in my life?” A miracle may be on the way. God appears in the dry places of our lives, as HE did with Gideon. HE never forsakes us. HE is in the heart of every ‘Born-again Believer’, watching over us. HE loves us so much; HE never takes His eyes off of us. HE speaks to us through songs, services, private devotionals, prayer.

When we feel we have not experienced God’s power, realize we may be the miracle someone needs. God saw something in Gideon – and said to him, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!” Who has God made you to be? Gideon was used by God in spite of who he was or what he had. God can work through us and make us into someone or something we never imagined. God will ‘make’ us a ‘miracle’.

Do we believe in the power of God? We must Believe to receive! Do you need a miracle? The Lord changes lives from the inside out to make us what HE wants us to be, as HE did with Gideon. And the Lord said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.”
