It Came Upon A Midnight Clear… a poem written by Edmund Sears

It came upon a midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, goodwill to men, From heaven’s all-gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come, With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats O’er all the weary world; Above its sad and lowly plains, They bend on hovering wing, And ever o’er its Babel sounds The blessèd angels sing.

Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long; Beneath the angel-strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong; And man, at war with man, hears not The love-song which they bring; O hush the noise, ye men of strife, And hear the angels sing.

And ye, beneath life’s crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow, Look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing. O rest beside the weary road, And hear the angels sing!

For lo!, the days are hastening on, By prophet bards foretold, When with the ever-circling years Comes round the age of gold When peace shall over all the earth Its ancient splendors fling, And the whole world give back the song Which now the angels sing.

The sights, sounds, and smells of Christmas are everywhere! In our Scripture passage today, 2 Corinthians 2:12-17, the Apostle Paul uses the idea of fragrances to describe the Christian life.

He begins this section with an expression for God’s faithfulness wherever life leads him. Paul has made his way to Troas for the purpose of the Gospel, and doors are opening for him. He sees God’s hand at work.

But in verse 13, Paul’s spirit becomes burdened for Titus who never showed up, so he decides to go looking for him.

Then he says, “But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.” (Vs 14-15)

Paul realized, that even though it was hard to leave Troas when things were going so well, God would still use him for His glory. Wherever he went, the opportunity to spread the gospel went with him; his mission was a constant.

The purpose of the Christian life remains the same today. Our purpose is to live, teach, and display Christ and the Gospel in our lives.

When we live our lives in such a way that Jesus is glorified and proclaimed, and the true knowledge of God is being displayed through us, we are right where God wants us to be. A life lived for Christ becomes a sweet sacrificial fragrance that pleases the Lord.

But the things of this world stand in opposition to Christ and are just the reverse (vs. 16). Like the smell of Bourbon Street on a Sunday morning, the world is drawn to disgusting “smells”, yet hates the sweet fragrance of the Christian life. When a person remains dead in his sins, he will be drawn to ugliness, to sin, to death and its stench.

Let’s commit our Christmas Season to the celebration of Jesus. May our lives rise to God as a sweet aroma of life lived by the Truth of His Word. May we know with all certainty that God is honored by our lives, and that the world can clearly see that we are living for Jesus.

Our music service was absolutely beautiful with all Christmas music. Dr. Kari Johnstone

,a flutist with the Monroe Symphony Orchestra, and daughter in law of Sarah and David Johnstone, brought a very inspiring medley of Christmas carols. Bro. Bubba’s message was “Down to Earth”. Philippians2:5-11. Incarnation is taking on the human form by God. That is what Jesus did for us. John 1:1 tells us that the Word was with God in the beginning of creation. Verse 14 tells us the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus is, was, and always will be. It is hard to comprehend that He gave up so much to live with us to provide a way for us to spend eternity with Him.

Jesus enjoyed life while He was here. He attended the wedding at Cana to have fun. He showed us how to enjoy life without sinning. Jesus was, is not, and never will be man again. He came for a purpose. I Peter 3: 22. He fulfilled that purpose and now sits on the right hand of God. He has provided a way for us to be forgiven of our sins and go to heaven. He has taught us how to have a happy life while keeping our eyes on Heaven. Jesus was and still is seeking sinners. If we truly believe Jesus was God and man ,and repent, He will save us. He came as meek and mild. In the end He will not be compassionate to those who rejected Him. Revelations 19: 11-21. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. How do you see Jesus? It will depend on where you spend eternity. December is a busy month at FB Marion. Sunday evening, December 14., will be our children’s program, “The Other Wiseman”. Saturday morning, December 20, we will be delivering fruit baskets to the community. Sunday morning, December 21, the choir will be leading us in worship before the morning message. Sunday evening, December 21, we will be serenading Marion. Sunday evening, December 28 will be our end of year candlelight service. Wednesday evening, December 31, we will have our fireworks.

What Is Christmas All About? It is about the Problem and the Solution. Our world is in a mess – morally, economically, spiritually. How did we get in this mess? Genesis 3 – Never dialogue with the devil as Eve did. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent … The Bible warns us – your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour – First Peter 5:8. Do not: Distort or Doubt the Word of God (anyone who casts doubt on God’s Word serves Satan), Deny God’s Wisdom (Verse 4), for You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You – Psalm 5:4.

The enemy tells us to demand our rights! But First John 2:16 says – For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. Sin is a choice! Demons cannot make us do anything for It is not what goes in … that defiles a man; but what comes out … – Matthew 15:11. Eve then shared with Adam; often sinners do not want to sin alone.

Christmas is the Promise to the Solution – And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; HE shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel (verse 15). Only the Second Adam could restore what the First Adam lost. Isaiah 7:14 – and shall call His name Immanuel.
