Thanksgiving: the purpose of Thanksgiving IS TO GIVE thanks – to be thankful that we DO HAVE a “Christmas” and an “Easter” – that we do have a Savior in the risen Christ Jesus.

Before there was an American (new world/ Pilgrim) Thanksgiving, there were centuries of people who gave thanks and praise to the Lord. One we’ll talk about today is the German composer and musician, Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach believed and said, “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” -– “Music’s only purpose should be for the glory of God and the recreation of the human spirit.” -– “Where there is devotional music, God is always at hand with His gracious presence.”

Who knew? Who knew that Bach was so musically faithful to God? Probably our Pastor’s wife; our music leader. Do you listen to Bach’s music? Or The Gaither Vocal Band? Bluegrass gospel or Contemporary Christian music? Or any number of gospel groups and soloists? Bach believed that music should be/was created and performed with its principal goal being to move one’s heart. We believe that gospel music can indeed move our hearts — move our hearts to the realization of how deeply God loves us. We can be moved by gospel music to recognize/remember just how blessed we are. Moved to be grateful and thankful that God sent Jesus to us to become “The Way”. John 14:6 “Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man come unto the Father, but by me.”

Question: Ought we not be Thankful also for the great composers of gospel music – of any genre that help us give thanks and glory to God? Bach said, “I have always kept one end in view, namely … to conduct a well-regulated church music to the honor of God.” Music that bring us closer to God is a blessing. And that blessing brings us calm, peace and hope. Psalm 57:7 “My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music.” Psalm 105:2 “Sing to Him, sing praise to Him; tell of all His wonderful acts.”

We wish you and yours a Happy Thanks-giving.

as a side note, Johann Sebastian Bach put this as the heading on each composition ”J. J.,” the initials for, ”Jesus Juva” which means “Jesus help me.” And he ended them with “S.D.G.,” the initials for, “Soli Dei Gratia” which means “To God alone be the glory.”

Psalm 100:1-5 – Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. We joyfully Praise the Lord for Who HE Is, as we joyfully serve Him. As we worship God, let us sing praises to Him. Know that the Lord, HE is God. HE made us and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

As we approach Thanksgiving, let us gladly worship Him. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with Praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. We should be thankful for everything, beginning with the greatest gift – Christ Jesus. First Thessalonians 5:18 – in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Call on Him in your time of need. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God – Philippians 4:6. This Thanksgiving, let us come before Him, being thankful for His unending love. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations.
