Thirty five years ago — Part 2

The morning of the invasion of Kuwait was surreal in
Saudi Arabia. I drove into the Arab town of Abqaiq and
it was business as usual. It was the Muslim Saturday
and the town was sleepy with very little activity. There
was no expanded security at the gate as I returned to
camp and I started to question if I had really
heard that there had been an invasion. I went
to the dining hall for breakfast and there were
several families eating and enjoying their meal.
I felt like screaming that does no one understand
what is happening.
That day was a prep to get out if I had to.
I would go south and skirt Half Moon Bay, go
around Qatar and drive into Dubai; most being
off road. That night the Saudi television
network had nothing about the invasion and it
was up to BBC to let us know what was happening.
