Native American leader
speaks today at museum
John Barbry, a prominent figure among Native American leaders in Louisiana, will give a public presentation in the Union Museum of History and Art in Farmerville on at 5 p.m.
Barbry, who heads the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe Language and Culture Revitalization Program, will discuss the work of his organization. The museum is located at 211 N. Main Street, Farmerville.
Barbry is a Research Supervisor in the manuscripts division at the Historic New Orleans Collection and was the first Native American archivist at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in 1993. He earned a B.A. in Music Education from McNeese State University and an M.A. in History from the University of New Orleans.
Parish burn ban
in effect
A parish-wide burn ban, in place since Sunday, remained in effect as of Wednesday.
Extremely dry conditions and elevated wind speeds compelled the Union Parish Police Jury to enact the ban.
The ban prohibits the open air burning of any trash, garbage, leaves, limbs and branches or debris of any kind.
The band will remain in effect until lifted by the UPPJ. Those who violate the ban are subject to citation and fines. Call the police jury office at 368-3296 for more information.

Garden club hosts
talk on roses
The Farmerville Garden Club will host a discussion on growing roses at 1:30 p.m. on March 7 at the Farmerville Methodist Church. The program title is “Roses – New Arrivals and Pest Prevention,” presented by Paula Thomas. The discussion is open to the public, and those who arrive a little early can enjoy coffee and dessert before the discussion begins.
Members who have not yet done so are asked to be pay their Garden Club dues at the meeting.

LDWF to host
Zoom meeting
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will hold a public meeting on Zoom on Mar. 2 at 6 p.m., to discuss its proposed new hunting regulations.
The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission adopted notices of intent for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 hunting seasons, 2024-25 general and Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) hunting seasons and rules and regulations, 2025 general and WMA turkey hunting season and rules and regulations, and 2024-25 migratory bird hunting season and rules and regulations at its January meeting.
