Big loss upsets Demons, encourages first-year coach

A new coach has to replace seven
seniors lost off last year’s state runner
up.
As bleak as that might look, don’t
tell Blake Wolfe and the Downsville
Community Charter School Demons
this is a rebuilding year.
DCCS opened the season with a
roster that had very little varsity experience
– three juniors, two seniors,
two eighth graders, a freshman and a
scattering of sophomores.
“Everybody is trying to call this a
rebuilding year,” Wolfe said. “I keep
asking the guys why does it have to
be, reminding them that it does not
have to be a rebuilding year. Yeah, we
are just a young team with not a lot of
experience right now, but hopefully
get our experience going and make a
run at it at the end of the year. It is not
how you start, it is how you finish.”
The Demons are off to a 3-4 start,
with three games this week – at home
against Choudrant on Monday and a
home-and-home series with Jonesboro
Hodge that sees the series start
at J-Hodge on Tuesday and return to
Downsville for a Friday game at 6 p.m.
Downsville went 1-2 in the Haynesville
tournament last weekend. They
dropped a 6-2 decision against the
host Class 2A Tigers on Friday. They
opened play Saturday with a 10-9 win
against Class 1A Haynesville. By
the time they faced Class 2A North
Caddo in their final game Saturday,
the Demons had exhausted their experienced
pitchers and dropped a 15-0
decision to the Rebels.
Following the game against North
Caddo, Wolfe said he was encouraged
by the team’s reaction.
“As a coach, it’s a good thing to
see that there is a little bit of fight
in those guys and that they will be
ready to bounce back next week,”
Wolfe said.
DWCS has three game scheduled
this week. They were on the road Monday
night against Choudrant before
taking on Class 2A Jonesboro-Hodge
in a home-and-home series that wraps
up with a game at Larry Stegall Field.
