Photo of Dr. Bendel JohnsonShreveport, La- Dr. Bendel Johnson was born on October 21, 1938 in Monroe, Louisiana and died Friday, September 21, 2012 following an extended illness. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 24, 2012 at Summer Grove Baptist Church.  Officiating was Dr. Rod Masteller and Dr. Murry Hodge. Interment followed in Forest Park West Cemetery. Visitation with the family was from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday, September 23, 2012 at Rose-Neath Southside.
Dr. Johnson was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who committed his life to serving God, family and others. He was a kind, generous man with a wonderful sense of humor. He touched many lives as a physician and through his service to God and his community.As a 1961 graduate of Louisiana Tech University, he received his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1965. Upon his completion of his Urology residency in 1970, he opened his private practice at Willis-Knighton Medical Center, where he successfully and compassionately served the Shreveport community for over twenty years. After retiring from private practice in 1992, Dr. Johnson worked in Occupational Medicine for two years before becoming Medical Director of Health Plus of Louisiana. In addition to being affiliated with the Willis-Knighton Health System for over 30 years, Dr. Johnson served with many organizations. These include the American Urological Association, the Louisiana Urological Association, for which he served as president, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the Louisiana State Medical Society, and the Shreveport Medical Society. He also served as Clinical Professor of Urology at LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport for more than twenty years. Dr. Johnson also served on the Willis-Knighton Health System Board of Directors. Because of his love for his country, Dr. Johnson served in the Louisiana Army National Guard Reserves. As a strong pillar of his community, he served his local church in many capacities, from leading revival worship music at his home church in Marion, Louisiana, to serving on various committees and as Chairman of the Deacons at his current church, Summer Grove Baptist Church. He also served as Second Vice President of the Louisiana Baptist Convention. As a diligent and faithful member on the Louisiana College Board of Trustees, Dr. Johnson served in various capacities on Board committees. He was the honored recipient of the Louisiana College Trustees Distinguished Service Award in 2011.
Dr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Ura Hollis Johnson and Drew Johnson. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years who will always cherish his memory, Shelby Jean Warner Johnson; daughters, Vicki Johnson Timothy and husband, Sam of Southlake, TX, Carol Johnson Weissmann and husband, Mark of Grapevine, TX; and son, James Bendel Johnson and wife, Melany of Keller, TX. Also surviving him are his grandchildren, Shelby Timothy, Caroline Timothy, Stephen Timothy, Jonathan Weissmann, Jordan Weissmann, Emily Weissmann, Peyton Weissmann, Allison Johnson, and Madeline Johnson.
Honoring him as pallbearers were Mark Ambrose, Waylon Branch, Terry Hayes, Joe Leone, Charles Magee, amd Cecil Snider. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Bill Bickham, Dr. Pete Blanchard, Dr. Jack Coussons, Mr. James K. Elrod, Dr. James Jackson, Dr. Tommy Mook, Dr. James Moss, Dr. Thomas Palmer, and Dr. Donald Smith.
The family would like to express their thanks to the many physicians and caregivers, who so lovingly cared for Bendel. We especially thank the staff at Live Oak, who were so committed to his care. The family is so thankful for the outpouring love and support from friends, family, church and community throughout this journey.
