Funeral services for retired Air Force Master Sergeant Mr. Purvis Christian, 91, of Spearsville, LA were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Union Baptist Church in Spearsville, with Bro. Jarod Hawthorne officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home in Farmerville.
Mr. Purvis was born December 20, 1920 in the Mt. Union community to Mr. Lee Dewitt Christian and Mrs. Mary Boatwright Christian. He passed from this life from congestive heart failure on July 13, 2012. He was the oldest of two children. His father later remarried Maudie Bell Woodard Christian and they had six children.
He was married on December 6, 1943 to Mrs. Myrtis Floy Beaird in Avon Park, Fla. He was a WW II veteran and former POW who spent 20 years in the Air Force and retired at the rank of Master Sergeant. While in the Air Force he was awarded the Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WW II Honorable Service Button, European Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Longevity Service Award Ribbon. He was a proud member of the 390th Bomb Group. He was very proud of his service to his country and wanted to be sure no one would ever forget the sacrifices made to keep this country free. He later worked for seven years civil service for the Air Force and retired again before moving back home to the Spearsville community.
While in retirement Mr. Purvis enjoyed many years deer hunting, fishing, gardening and working around the place. He was a man who never sat still and as long as he was able he was constantly on the go. He loved and enjoyed his family very much and was always doing things to help each of them where he could. He lost his mother when he was only 9 years old and that set the tone for the rest of his life. He had to help take care of his father and younger brother and he never stopped helping folks from that point on. He was a member of Mt. Union Baptist church and although unable to attend for quite some time he loved the Lord very much.
Mr. Purvis was preceeded in death by his parents Mr. Lee Dewitt Christian and Mrs. Mary Boatwright Christian, step mother Maudie Bell Christian, brothers Ralph Christian, Herbert Christian and infant son George Lee Christian.
Mr. Purvis is survived by his wife of 68 years Mrs. Myrtis Floy Beaird Christian. Six children: Judy Thompson and husband John of Spearsville LA, Elaine Loard and husband Wayne of Longview, WA, Paul Christian and wife Linda of Alamosa, CO, Susan Farque and husband Harlen of Pineville, LA, David Christian and wife Claudette of Ruston, LA, James Christian and wife Debbie of Bernice, LA., 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Surviving siblings include brothers Woodard Christian, Kenneth Christian, Lewis Wayne Christian and sisters Estelle Christian and Barbara Nell Ellis.
Mr. Purvis was buried with full military honors.
Special mention to Judy and John Thompson for all they have done to help keep Mr. Purvis at home these last few years. Although it was a group effort by the whole family it could never have been done without their help and devotion. The family would also like to thank all his health care professionals and especially Dr. George Smith for helping Mr. Purvis have a few more years to enjoy his family.
Visitation was held Sunday at the church.
