Photo of Jerry RockettJerry Rockett of Heathsville passed away Sunday April 15, 2012 in Kilmarnock, Virginia at the age of 71 from complications due to pancreatic cancer. Jerry was born May 30, 1940 in Farmerville, Louisiana. He was the son of Jack E. Rockett and Blanche (Rhodes) Rockett of Spearsville, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his only brother, Kenneth W. Rockett, who passed away last November. Jerry is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandy (Haughton) Rockett, his son Jeff Rockett, daughter-in-law Connie Rockett, grandson Justin Rockett and great-grandson Tyler Rockett, all of Virginia, and nieces Erin Rockett of Ruston, Louisiana and Shannon Rockett of Fort Worth, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Camp Creek Baptist Church, Spearsville with Bro. Buddy Boatright officiating. Burial followed in Camp Creek Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home. Visitation was Saturday at the church one hour prior to the service. Honoraray pallbearers were Clyde Barron, Ed Rhodes, Michael Spears, Van Bennett, Tony Rabalais and George Perry.
Jerry spent his childhood and teen years in Spearsville, Louisiana and worked on the family farm. He played baseball and basketball during his school age years.
Jerry graduated from Spearsville High School in 1958 and earned a bachelorís degree in forestry from Louisiana Tech University in 1962 and completed graduate studies at Duke University. He was with the U.S. Forest Service for 35 years, retiring in 1996. Jerryís Forest service career took him to many places around the country, including stints as Ranger for the Tuskegee (Alabama), Ouachita (Oklahoma), and DeSoto (Mississippi) National Forests. Later management assignments saw Jerry and his family re-locate to Atlanta, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. He was an officer in the US Air Force Reserves and served during the Vietnam era, attaining the rank of Captain.
Jerry spent some of his spare time volunteering as a little league baseball coach for several years while living in California, and enjoyed playing golf on the local courses.
In retirement, he remained active and served as president of the Northumberland County Lionís Club in Virginia. Under his leadership, the Lions were involved in charitable works in the local community. Jerry was an accomplished woodworker and carpenter who was generous with his creations, such as complete mantles and bluebird houses. Jerry maintained his four-acre homestead in Virginia with loving detail.
Ever the optimist and a friend to all who met him, Jerry maintained his positive outlook through all his days on this earth.
