Farmers playoff seeding sets well with Spatafora

Heading into the last
week of the regular season,
football coaches across the
state are hoping to improve
their power ranking for the
Allstate/Sugar Bowl Louisiana
High School Athletic
Association playoffs.
Don’t count Union Parish
head coach Joe Spatafora
in that number.
The LHSAA’s power
rankings shows games
played through October 21
has the Farmers as the 23rd
seed in Class 3A. Louisianasportsline.
com – which uses
the LHSAA formula – has
games through October 28
in its formula, showing the
Farmers have a 20th seed in
the division.
Spatafora was asked if
the Farmers hope a win
Friday at Caldwell might
improve the team’s ranking
to get a first-round game at
“We’re in a great position
now,” Spatafora said.
“Twenty through twenty
three is a good spot for us.”
The potential exists for
the Farmers to get a second
shot at a district rival
who handed them a defeat
earlier in the season. The
power rankings through
Week Nine have Carroll (7-
2) at Number 12 and Wossman
(6-3) at 13.
Caldwell (1-8) comes into
the game on a seven-week
losing skid. Last week, however,
the Spartans kept it
close against Richwood –
who brought a 5-3 record
into the contest – before
falling 6-3.
The Farmers snapped a
two-game losing streak in
District 2-3A play with a
28-6 homecoming win over
Madison Parish.
As they have since
district play started, the
Farmers played outstanding
defense against the
Jaguars, with two interceptions
and one fumble

recovery. Through four
district games, the Farmers
are allowing just over
eight points per game, only
allowing more than one
score in a 14-13 overtime
loss to Carroll.
“Defensively, we continued
to play well,” Spatafora
said. “Offensively,
we played better. We executed
better, but we still
have a lot to fix and a short
time to get it done.”
